Reviewing the Best Hedge Fund Directories (USA):
Here we review the top hedge fund directories for the United States. Please note that with one exception, all of the reviewed hedge fund directories are at least $2,500. We reviewed dozens of hedge fund databases and directories and came up with five that really stand apart from the pack for their breadth, number of hedge funds covered, frequency of updates, value, and overall quality of their hedge fund directory.
1. HedgeFundContacts.com - $137
Number 1 overall on our list of hedge fund directories is HedgeFundContacts.com for its completely unbeatable value. Though, it ranks second in overall quality of the database, it is 1/10th the price of most other lists and far better than all but a few of its much more expensive peers. The Firm Search option allows you to search from over 3,500 hedge funds and private equity firms including address, phone, fax, multiple emails, AUM, # of employees and more.
The impressive People Search option lets users view full contact details for more than 8000 industry professionals (most are high ranking). This is probably the best hedge fund directory for most ordinary research and marketing purposes.
Pros: Outstanding price, updated monthly, most email contacts, search people or funds, great for marketing or job seekers, quickest and easiest to use hedge fund directory.
Cons: No performance data (AUM is available)
2. BarclayHedge - $4,500
The BarclayHedge database may be the best overall database in terms of breadth and quality, but at $4,500 it is out of the reach of most. Providing detailed performance data that is updated multiple times monthly, the BarclayHedge database may just be the most comprehensive available. Despite the difficult to swallow price, the BarclayHedge database remains the choice for the most discerning investors and financial institutions.
BarclayHedge also offers a very impressive Contact Database designed for those wishing to market to hedge funds. Though at $4,500, interested parties will probably get more value for their money from HedgeFundContacts.
Pros: Most comprehensive database, long company history, updated twice monthly
Cons: High price point, includes only US hedgefunds (others available)
3. Eurekahedge - $3,500
Eurekahedge is well known for its hedge fund indeces and their North American Hedge Fund Database does not dissapoint. With more than 2500 listings, the database primarily consists of US hedge funds, but also includes hedge funds from Canada and Mexico.
Eurekahedge also offers a Fund of Funds database for $3000 and a Global Hedge Fund Database for $12,000.
Pros: Includes Mexican and Canadian Funds, frequent updates, hard copy
Cons: Cheaper than some, but still expensive at $3,500
4. HedgeFundJobList - $30-$139
Designed specifically for job-seekers, HedgeFundJobList.com provides access to its database in download format only (no online database available). Additionally, lists are sold on a regional or state-by-state basis which may not meet the needs of some research groups. However, because lists are sold separately, individual lists are as cheap as $30. If you are looking for an inexpensive hedge fund list for a specific area, this may be the way to go.
Pros: Designed for job hunters, full contact information
Cons: State-by-state or regional lists only, not quite as comprehensive a contact database as some above (ie HedgeFundContacts.com or BarclayHedge)
5. HedgeCo - $2,500 - $5,000
HedgeCo has been providing access to its hedge fund database and hedge fund yellow pages for several years. Their hedge fund database is of high quality and can be a great tool for quickly finding funds and reviewing their performance. However, at $5,000 (including downloads), the HedgeCo database is not exactly a bargain. Those considering shelling out several thousand for a hedge fund directory should also consider the similarly priced BarclayHedge before making a decision.
Pros: Frequent updates, hedge fund contact information, overall high quality
Cons: Price, additional fees for download
5. FuturesFinder.com $279
FuturesFinder.com provides information specifically on Commodity Trading Advisors (CTA's) and managed futures programs. This is probably the best source for info on this hedge fund niche at an affordable price.
Pros: Frequent updates, global CTA contact information, price
Cons: Only includes CTAs and Managed Futures
